Body fat is probably the most hated object to exist on the surface of the planet and if you are trying to lose weight, you probably hate it more than anything else! We understand your struggle but we would also like to remind you that not all kinds of body fat are bad! In our blog post today, we will talk about the many kinds of body fat, what causes them, where they are found in the body and their roles in regulating our health. By the end, you will have a better idea of how bodies gain and lose weight, enabling you to cleverly lose weight without putting your body in danger.

What is Body Fat?

Adipose tissue, alternatively known as body fat, is not just a normal body part but also performs several essential functions such as storing energy for metabolic functions. For a better idea, we have categorized the functions into three segments below:

1. Essential

Our bodies need fat to regulate body temperatures and hormones, protect the internal organs, and help absorb vitamins from the foods we eat. So, without it, we would always be very, very sick.

2. Reserve

To provide extra energy whenever we need it, our bodies keep a reserve or store additional energy. This poses no threat to our bodies and helps us throughout the day.

3. Excess

This is the third kind of body fat which is not required either for essential or reserve functions. Found in places like our bellies, this can be linked to several health issues such as heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, and in some cases, certain forms of cancer.

What Causes Body Fat?

Both stress and consumption of certain foods can lead to the development of body fats. Stress leads to the release of the hormone cortisol which increases the visceral fat ratio in our bodies. Often found in parts like bellies, arms, and legs, this kind of fat triggers obesity.

Our bodies break down the fats contained in the food we eat and store them in cells for future usage. Now, our bodies are very good at storing fat. So the fat cells that are not contributing towards any essential purposes like regulating our hormones will quickly transform into excess visceral fat. Processed and fried foods carry an unhealthy amount of Trans fats which is extremely bad for health. So, if you are struggling with obesity, immediately stop with instant noodles, sodas and cokes. Also, cut down on excess sugar which causes rapid weight gain.

Different Types of Body Fat

Apart from the three main categories mentioned before, there are other kinds of body fat as well.

1. White Fat

The main kind of fat regulates hunger and also has receptors for cortisol and insulin. It can be found all over the body like the stomach, legs, and arms. It is also the biggest energy backup that our bodies have.

2. Brown Fat

This is responsible for the steady, comfy temperature of our bodies. Located on the back, around the shoulder area, and upper portion of the spine, it burns the energy that white fat stores.

3. Subcutaneous fat

Most fat is stored underneath our skin and is visible. 90% of the fat in our bodies is subcutaneous fat which is used to measure levels of body fat.

4. Visceral fat

Known as the hidden fat, it is stored deep inside our bellies and wrapped around the organs such as livers and intestines. Producing toxic chemicals and hormones is most dangerous to our health.

So What Does This All Mean?

When fighting a war, you must first know who exactly your opponent is. Similarly, for a healthy body weight loss program, know what body fat is and what hurts you the most. Losing weight and exercise is great but an expert’s help can always guide you in the right direction!
